Bringing Back the Natural Look of Cream City Brick in Milwaukee

Cream City brick is one of Milwaukee’s most recognizable architectural features. Over time, however, many buildings begin to lose their bright cream color as dirt, environmental buildup, and moisture create dark staining across the masonry surface.

In this project, our team cleaned the exterior of a historic Cream City brick building in Milwaukee that had developed heavy black staining over the years.

When Cream City Brick Starts to Darken

Even well-maintained buildings can gradually develop discoloration on the brick surface. The staining often appears uneven and can spread across large sections of the wall.

Common causes include:

  • Airborne pollutants settling into the brick
  • Organic growth such as algae or mildew
  • Long-term moisture exposure
  • Dirt and debris trapped in the brick’s porous surface

Because Cream City brick is softer and more absorbent than many modern bricks, these stains tend to build up slowly and become more noticeable over time.

Cleaning Historic Masonry the Right Way

When working with historic brick, the goal is not just to clean the surface, but to restore the masonry without damaging it.

For this project, the cleaning process focused on safely removing the staining while protecting the brick and surrounding mortar. Specialized masonry cleaning solutions and controlled washing methods were used to lift the buildup from the brick’s pores.

This method allows the brick to be cleaned thoroughly while maintaining the original character of the building.

The Difference After Cleaning

Once the staining was removed, the natural color of the Cream City brick became visible again. The building immediately looked brighter and more defined, with the architectural details around the windows and arches standing out clearly.

Proper masonry cleaning can dramatically improve the appearance of a building while helping maintain the condition of the brick for years to come.

Preserving Milwaukee’s Historic Brick

Cream City brick is an important part of Milwaukee’s architectural history. Regular maintenance and proper cleaning help protect these buildings and keep their original character visible.

If your property has dark staining, discoloration, or buildup on Cream City brick, professional cleaning can help restore the natural look of the masonry.
